  1. Getting the plans.  You'll need a detailed plan, or blueprint, before you begin building your wooden picnic table.   There are many downloadable blueprints and plans available on the Net, both free and paid.  Get one that meets your desired specifications.
  2. The lumber.  Many people make the mistake of using the wrong type of lumber when building outside furniture, such as a wooden picnic table.   Make sure that you are using pressure-treated lumber for your wooden picnic table project. Pressure-treated lumber will hold up better outside in the elements than regular untreated lumber.  If you are concerned about the chemicals used in pressure-treated lumber, make sure that you purchase the eco-friendly type to avoid exposure to these chemicals.
  3. Getting started.  After you have your wooden picnic table blueprints and your materials, begin by cutting the lumber to the specifications given in the blueprints.  It is easiest to cut all of the lumber to size before you begin assembling the wooden picnic table.  Make sure to take the necessary precautions and wear your safety glasses while operating power tools.
  4. Assembly.  After the lumber has been cut to the desired sizes, begin assembling the table according to the blueprint directions.  Be careful to follow the specifications exactly when making the wooden picnic table, since the weight bearing properties might decrease if not assembled properly.  It is best to assemble the wooden picnic table in the location where you intend to leave it.  After the table is assembled, it will be difficult to move.
  5. Relax and enjoy.  Now that you've made your own wooden wooden picnic table, it's time to invite the family and friends over for a backyard party to enjoy it with you.  Break out the drinks and appetizers and head outside.
