How To Make Your Own Furniture
Figuring out how to make your own furniture can be easy. Making your own furniture can be a fulfilling project, if you like that sort of thing. Making your own furniture could also be a major pain in the butt if you don't like bothering with tools and such. The difficulty in making your own furniture totally depends on how much work you're willing to put in to it. Creativity also plays a role in making your own furniture. So, it's up to you. Will you take the easy way out, or will you expend blood, sweat, and tears creating your own furniture? Well, either way, here's some good example of furniture pieces you could make.
- Creating a chair. The trick to making any piece of furniture is to make sure everything is cut evenly. Chairs are probably the easiest piece of furniture to make. All you need is for evenly cut legs, a place to plop your bottom, and a back to lean against. Here's an easy chair design. Cut four pieces of decently thick would. Make them no longer than two feet long a piece. These will be the legs. Make sure the ends of both sides of the wood are completely flat. Cut two more pieces of wood no longer than a foot a piece. Nail one leg on one end of the foot long piece of wood and another leg at the other end. Do the same with the other three pieces of wood. At this point you should have two "U" shaped pieces. Stand the "U" shaped pieces up. Now all you have to do is nail more pieces of wood on top of the "U" shaped pieces. Make the length of these particular pieces about a foot long. Once you do this, you'll have a very rectangular shaped seat for a chair. At this point you can get more wood to create the back of the chair or leave it as is. This is probably the most basic design you can make, but it is a chair. Not too difficult right? It doesn't get hard until you want to style the chair.
- Creating a table. Guess what? Making the table can be done in the exact fashion you used to create the chair. The only difference is the length of the wood and the height of the legs. You see, creating basic furniture is easy. It only gets difficult when you want to add intricate designs into the wood. Make sure everything is cut evenly and get to building. You should also add an extra "leg" in the middle of the table so it can hold more weight. As you can see, making your own furniture is very simple stuff.
- Complex designs. If you want to go this route, this is when creating the furniture can become difficult. Everything needs to be uniform, but that uniformity can be rather complex. Say, for instance, you want to create a chair with a rounded bottom, and legs with cylindrical shapes in them. You're going to need complex saws to manipulate the wood correctly. You're going to have to cut the exact shapes and designs into each leg and so on and so forth. Then, you're going to have to add a protective coat over the wood. It'll take some time to get good at this form of artistry.
- Good practice. The best way to go about learning how to add designs to your furniture is to play around in the wood shop. For example, to create four sets of legs with equal designs, you need to cheat so to speak. the best way to do it is to cut those four legs at the same time. You need to take your four evenly cut legs and stack them on top of each other. Using the table saw, very carefully shape the designs into the legs. The better you get in the wood shop, the more creative you can be with creating your own furniture.
