Scientific calculations often require one to know how many feet are in a meter. The science and health field present their measurements using the metric system. This system is used in order for all countries to easily communicate and make conversions. However, because Americans are accustomed to making measurements using the standard system, it can be difficult for them to gain an understanding of the appropriate length, weight, or volume when medical or scientific terms are being compared. It is very helpful to understand how units relate, such as feet to a meter.

To determine how many feet are in a meter, you will need:

  • Calculator
  • Conversion number for the number of feet in a meter
  • Value of meters
  1. Obtain set conversion numbers. At the end of the 1800's, the National Bureau of Standards set the value of 1 meter to equal 1.0936133 yards.
  2. Determine the number of feet in a yard. There are 3 feet in one yard. To discover how many feet are in one meter, multiply the number of yards by three using your calculator. You will enter 1.0936133 times 3. The answer is 3.2808399 or more commonly seen rounded as 3.28.
  3. Multiply To obtain the number of feet in a given set of meters, multiply the number of meters you have by 3.28, the number of feet in a meter, and the product will be the number of feet in your given amount of meters.

Be cautious about adding the decimal in the number.

To go back to meters, you will divide rather than multiply.
