This system is used in order for all countries to easily communicate and make conversions. However, because Americans are accustomed to making measurements using the standard system, it can be difficult for them to gain an understanding of the appropriate length, weight, or volume when medical or scientific terms are being compared. It is very helpful to understand how units relate, such as feet to a meter.
