Do you need to know how to massage a leg cramp from the sciatic nerve? If you’ve ever woken up with a sharp stabbing pain where the nerve is located, try a massage to ease the pain. This tactic works almost as well as a brand new Dodge. Car metaphors aside, knowing this information can help you overcome the pain.
- Locate the sciatic nerve. If you have suffered from this type of pain, you probably already know where it is. If not, the nerve is located in the back of the leg. If the pain radiates down the leg, a pinched sciatic nerve is the most likely cause. Unlike other pinched nerves, this does not result in tingling or numbness.
Use a massage oil if you so desire. You do not need to use these oils, but they can help relax the muscles surrounding the nerve and make the process take less time. Apply the oil in the middle of the lower back. Start the massage here as this is the location of the sciatic nerve. Despite the name, the leg cramp’s source is not in the leg, but in the lower back.
Gently rub the area of the skin. You do not want to add additional pain to a leg cramp caused by sciatica. You merely want to rub the muscles and areas around the nerve to help them relax. Do this for at least fifteen minutes. Massage the area around the sciatic nerve to relieve the leg cramp.
- Sit down afterwards. A person can suffer from a sciatic nerve cramp from overuse of the muscles or some other condition. Obesity, slipped discs and osteoarthritis are all conditions that affect men.
- Do not sit or stand in one place too long. Standing still or wearing high platform shoes can also cause this a sciatic nerve leg cramp. A massage only provides short term relief.
