How To Measure Vitamin C Contents Of Citrus Fruits
There is a very simple method for how to measure the Vitamin C contents of citrus fruits. The taste and quality of the citrus fruit depends on the ascorbic content. We all know the importance of including Vitamin C in our daily diet, but have you ever wondered how much of this nutrient is located in the citrus fruit? Vitamin C, also referred to as ascorbic acid is an important antioxidant that boosts the immune system to fight bacterial infections, produce collagen, and to assist in the growth and repair of tissues. The recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C should be no less than 60 mg a day for adults.
In order to measure the Vitamin C contents of citrus fruits you will need:
- Three pipettes or eyedroppers
- Vitamin C indicator mixture
- 10 ml measuring cylinder
- Spoons or stirring rods
- Three Vitamin C juice samples
- Medicine Cups
- Use Vitamin C Indicator. In a 50 ml medicine cup, slowly pour fifteen milliliter of the Vitamin C indicator mixture.
- Add Juice Samples. Use an eyedropper to add a drop of Vitamin C juice in the indicator medicine cup, and gently stir the contents.
- Stir Each Added Drop. Add drops of orange juice into the indicator medicine cup, until the color changes from blue to colorless. Always remember to stir the contents from each drop.
- Record The Number Of Drops. Make a note of the amount of drops of orange juice you added to the indicator until the mixture becomes colorless. When the mixture becomes clearer, the Vitamin C solution becomes more potent. Always use a clean dropper for each sample you test.
- Calculate The Added Drops. When you've added each of the three orange juice samples three times, you will need to compute the average number of orange juice drops to the nearest tenth.
