Mineral oil aids in pain relief in a variety of ways. Long before modern medical conveniences, these oils were used to help with multiple conditions. There are still many practical uses of mineral oil, especially when it comes to pain relief. However, it is important to remember that overdose can occur with mineral oils and precautions should be used.

  1. Bowel movements Mineral oils can provide relief for those who are constipated and may have painful bowel movements. One of the main ingredients in various enemas and similar products is mineral oil. Mineral oil aids in pain relief by reducing friction and allowing for ease of passage of stool, which may greatly benefit those with conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.
  2. Skin conditions Mineral oil is commonly used to provide relief from skin conditions. This can include a condition called "cradle cap" in infants, psoriasis and some forms of eczema. Mineral oil is often found in products designed specifically for these problems and aids in pain relief by decreasing irritation and soothing dry, itchy skin.
  3. Ear pain Pain in the ears caused by wax build up can be remedied using mineral oil. Dropping a few drops in the ear can help loosen hardened wax, eliminating the pain that can be caused by removing wax by irrigation and/or other methods. A drop or two of warm mineral oil can also be used to relieve ear pain.
