Learning how to monitor a computer can be beneficial if you want to keep an eye on your computer or see who uses it when you are away. One way to monitor a computer is through using a webcam. By combining a webcam with a program for surveillance, you can easily keep an eye on your computer. Follow these steps to monitor a computer.

What you will need:

  • Webcam
  1. Attach the webcam to the computer if it is not already installed. Webcams are almost always attached with a USB cable. There should be USB ports on the front or back of the computer.
  2. Install the drivers and any programs included with the webcam. The drivers may be installed automatically. If not, they should be downloaded from the manufacturer's website to make sure you get the newest version.
  3. Find a motion detection program. You can use a program like WebCam Monitor from DeskShare. There are many free programs that offer motion detection services. There may even be one included with your webcam.
  4. After installing the program, position the camera so that you will be able to see who is using your computer. Test the program by walking by to make sure it records when it is set.
  5. Review recordings after you are away from your computer. This is a great way to catch family members or co-workers that are on your computer without your permission. You can surprise them by telling them you know they were using your computer.
