Wondering how to move your iTunes from one computer to another? After purchasing a new computer, moving iTunes may be performed in a couple of different ways to ensure you do not lose your purchased songs, movies or Apps. iTunes permits up to five computers to have active access to a single iTunes user account. Once the five computers have been activated, you will receive a prompt allowing you to deactivate all computers which allows you to add iTunes to a new computer and reactivate other computers still in use, if desired.

You will need:

  • iTunes Account
  • Computer to switch to

How to Move iTunes From One Computer to Another

  1. Create a back-up of all iTunes files. Attach a USB harddrive to the computer containing your current active iTunes account. Once the computer recognizes the USB device, open the iTunes folder on the computer and copy all of the files containing songs, albums, movies, games, Apps and so forth and paste them into the folder for the USB drive.
  2. Attach the USB drive to another computer. Open the iTunes folders and copy them to the My Music folder on the new computer.
  3. Download iTunes to the new computer. When the download is complete, login using your Apple ID and password.
  4. Click on FILE in the iTunes window and select ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY. Choose the My Music folder from your computer’s files and click OKAY. The music and files will transfer to your iTunes on this new computer.

If the computers are on the same network, rather than use a USB harddrive, you can simply open the My Music folder of the new computer from the old computer and open the iTunes folder on the old computer as well. Copy the iTunes files and paste into the My Music folder of the new computer, and then continue by downloading iTunes, logging in and adding the folder to your iTunes library.
