How Often Should Tires Be Rotated?

Have you ever asked yourself, "How often should tires be rotated?" It can sometimes be confusing knowing how often tires should be rotated. Although it has been a long time since the invention of the "horseless carriage," it is still the case that the only part of the vehicle (in a properly working car) that touches the road is the tires.

Most cars on the road today are either front- or rear-wheel drive, and because of this the wear and tear on the front and back tires is uneven. Even in a four-wheel drive car, the tire wear is uneven because breaking and turning puts more of the damage on the rear tires. If your tires are not rotated, this can mean that one tire will wear more quickly than the others. Not only will this mean a shorter life span for your tires, but it also means that your car will not be operating to its full capacity because it will be sitting unevenly on the road.

The general consensus for tire rotation is to do it every other oil change. If you use synthetic tires, then get them rotated every 6,000 miles.

The trick is to find a place that will do it for free. Not every oil change center will rotate your tires without cost. However, if you take your car to a mechanic that deals in the same brand that you own, it is the case with most brands that they are contractually obligated to rotate the tires for free. Better yet, you can often take your car back to the place where you got it. Although this often means a separate trip, you will be saving up to $20. While you are there, make sure that your tire pressure is correct, as uneven pressure can contribute to uneven wear and tear.
