Do you need to know how to open gas tank on 1996 Range Rover? Land Rover Range Rovers are excellent vehicles. They are tough, rugged and durable; however, they have a recurring problem. The gas tank switch often fails, leaving you unable to open the gas tank and fill up your Range Rover. Use the steps here to open the gas tank on your 1996 Range Rover.

To open the gas tank on your 96 Range Rover, you will need:

  • Pozidrive screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Fuel tank switch
  1. Press the gas tank door release button on the dash. Check to see if the fuel door opened. If it did not open, this signifies that the electronic switch is broken.
  2. Get in the Range Rover and adjust the steering wheel downward all the way. Locate the two screws on the dash.
  3. Remove the two screws (the only two visible screws) with a pozidrive screwdriver. Note that this is a special type of screw, not a normal Phillips head.
  4. Locate the screw covers below the dash. There are four of these. Pry the covers off using a thin flathead screwdriver.
  5. Remove the four screws below the dash with a pozidrive screwdriver. Locate the lap vent below the dash.
  6. Remove the lap vent from the attached hose. The dash cover is free. Remove it and place it aside.
  7. Locate the two screws at the top of the instrument cluster. Remove them using a pozidrive screwdriver.
  8. Lift the dash molding and remove the old gas tank switch on your 1996 Range Rover. Note that you must disconnect the clasp behind the dash molding that connects the electrical switch to the dash before removal.
  9. Replace the switch with a new switch. Reassemble the dash following the disassembly steps in reverse. Test the switch by opening the fuel tank door.
