If you’re wondering how to own a restaurant, you may be pleased to learn that there are many ways to get started in this business. You may start out by buying an existing restaurant or investing in a franchise. If you prefer, however, you may also open a brand-new restaurant based on your own ideas. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Buy a restaurant franchise. One of the easiest ways to own a restaurant is to purchase a franchise. A franchise allows you to get started by using an established company's name and business model. Often, franchise businesses are well known, so you may have a leg up when it comes to getting customers because of name recognition.
  2. Purchase an existing restaurant. You may get lucky and find an existing restaurant that is profitable but in need of a new owner. Sometimes an existing owner just needs to sell for some reason or wants to retire. If you purchase an existing restaurant, you may skip the planning and start up stages of a new business and jump right into the fray. You may even get a steady flow of loyal customers as a bonus.
  3. Rent or buy commercial property. If you want to own a restaurant, you may decide to rent or buy commercial space and then start a restaurant from scratch. You may like this idea because it allows you to create your own vision and develop a unique eatery. This often requires a good deal more work than buying an existing restaurant or franchise, however. You will be responsible for everything from securing licensing and zoning permits to buying equipment for the eatery and creating a solid business plan.
  4. Build your own eatery. While you could open a restaurant in an existing commercial space, you may decide that you prefer to build your own. This may be the most costly and time-consuming choice when you want to own a restaurant. It does, however, give you the chance to ensure that the building that houses your restaurant meets your needs perfectly.

There are many legal concerns you will face when you are in the restaurant business. Speak with a lawyer before you get started.
