By keeping some basic guidelines in mind, you can learn how to paddle a kayak in whitewater. While whitewater kayaking can be thoroughly enjoyable, it can also be very dangerous if some basic principles are followed. In order to both have a great time and prevent injury or even death, it is essential that you are aware of your surroundings at all times when kayaking in whitewater. Be on the lookout for rocks, trees, and other items that can be dangerous.

  1. Sit up straight in the kayak, making sure to keep your core muscles strong. Hold the kayak with a flexible grip, keeping your wrists straight and strong, and your elbows bent to approximately 90 degrees.
  2. Reach on of the blades of the paddle towards the front end of the boat. Make sure to twist the paddle so that the face of the blade is facing you as it hits the water. Use your core muscles to twist your torso in the opposite direction, bringing the paddle through the water.
  3. Be aware of the water that you are kayaking in. This is probably the most important consideration you must keep in mind. As discussed above, it is important to be aware of any rocks or trees in the water. But you must also be aware of the water itself. If the water is relatively calm and you feel comfortable for the time being, you can establish a relaxed rhythm of paddling that allows you to use the momentum of the water. But during periods of high turbulence, you must rapidly change the paddle from hand to hand in order to keep the kayak under control.
