How To Paint Tile

Learning how to paint tile can seem like a daunting task. It can certainly be done, but will require lots of prep work because tile is not a surface that’s generally painted. High-gloss tile can be especially difficult to paint and will require extra prep work. If your tile surface gets wet repeatedly (like in the shower), you might want to reconsider painting it because the paint might not stick very well.

To paint tile, you will need:

  • 220 grit sandpaper
  • Heavy duty tile cleaner
  • Oil based primer
  • Oil based paint
  • Painter's tape
  • A newspaper or drop cloth
  • A three-inch paint brush
  1. First you will have to prepare the tile to be painted by cleaning it thoroughly. You should use a very abrasive cleaner and clean the entire area the best you can. Clean using circular strokes. This will help remove some of the gloss and help the paint stick.
  2. After the area has been cleaned, you will need to sand the tile. Sanding the tile is best done with an automatic sander. Use a 220 grit sandpaper to sand the area really well. Make sure you get into all of the cracks and crevices. Pay special attention to corners (a power sander may not get to those areas).
  3. Tape off the areas you don’t want painted or remove nearby fixtures. Tape off the fixtures and areas that could potentially get painted. Use painter’s tape to section off these areas. Place newspaper or drop cloths on the floor to avoid a huge mess.
  4. Apply the primer. When painting tile, you should spend the extra money and buy the best primer available. Apply the primer, using top to bottom strokes until all areas are completely covered. Check for drips of paint that might be difficult to remove later. Let dry overnight or until completely dry. This can take longer in very humid areas.
  5. Apply the paint. Use the same up and down strokes to apply the paint throughout the tile. Be very careful to avoid drips because they will be hard to remove. Paint very carefully using your brush. Paint each tile individually to ensure the best results.
