Many Americans choose to rent an apartment or home instead of own their own home, and this guide on how to pay rent will help you make sure you pay your rent on time. It may be confusing to learn how to pay rent when you are renting your first apartment or rent, but if you make sure to follow these steps on how to pay rent you will have a great renter's history and better credit to buy your own home in the future.

  1. Make sure you can afford your lease. Before you even choose to rent an apartment, make sure the lease is affordable to you. This will help you avoid future problems and questions about how to pay rent. Your lease should be not more than one third of your income.
  2. Read your lease thoroughly. When reading your lease, make sure to analyze the lease terms, including any applicable late fees for late rent and any fees for breaking your lease.
  3. Budget your money. Make sure you budget your money so that you have enough for rent each month, preferably with some left over. This is one of the most important steps in how to pay your rent for your apartment or house.
  4. Talk to your landlord ahead of time if you cannot make your rent payment on time. This is a very important action to take if you find that you cannot pay your rent on time. Ask your landlord if you can perhaps pay whatever you can afford (hopefully the majority of your rent by the due date) and pay the rest within a few days, preferably not more than a week later.
  5. Don't let mistakes repeat themselves. If you must pay your rent late, make sure your landlord knows that this is not going to happen again, and make sure that it doesn't.

Tips:

  • Don't take monetary risks or spend excessively if you think you may be short on your rent.
  • Do whatever you can to make sure you pay your rent on time, even if it means going without your weekly dinner out.
  • If you need help, look up government organizations and agencies that can help you with paying your rent.
