Learning how to plan soccer coaching sessions is an important aspect when coaching the sport.  No matter what level you're coaching, planning is necessary to become efficient in practices.  Here are some considerations to take into account to learn how to plan soccer coaching sessions.

  1. Keep the level of the players in mind.  It is important to plan soccer coaching sessions around the skills and age of the players.  Obviously you would have many more options for a high school team than one consisting of 8-year olds.  Be realistic about the maturity of the players and how a coaching session will go.
  2. Plan according to time.  Look at how many coaching sessions you have within a period of a week or two.  Plan activities that make the most out of a great deal of time, or condense skills into short periods of time if they are at a premium.  Work with what you have if you don't have much time.
  3. Plan by dividing skills in the coaching session.  Soccer is a sport that consists of many relevant skills.  One strategy for planning soccer coaching sessions is to plan according to areas targeted in practice.  Make sure you plan time for shooting, dribbling, passing, etc.
  4. Let the players have fun.  Chances are you are coaching a youth team.  Make sure that you give the players the opportunity to enjoy practicing with each other.  Pay attention to what they like most, such as a friendly scrimmage.  Plan these into soccer coaching sessions to ensure everyone has a good time.
