How To Play Better Golf

All golfers want to learn how to play better golf. Even the pros on the PGA Tour are constantly tinkering with their swings and trying the latest and greatest equipment in the hopes of finding that competitive edge. For them, lowering their average score by ½ stroke per round can mean the difference between being a multi-million dollar winner and an also ran. For average players, the opportunity exists to easily cut five or ten strokes off their score. To do so requires better physical fitness and a change in approach to both practicing and playing.

  1. Practice with a purpose. You’ve seen average golfers at the driving range and how they seem to be just aimlessly hitting balls into the distance. Good players take a different approach. They try to simulate their on course routine. They choose a target the same way. They line up the shot the same way. They give each shot their best effort.
  2. Improve your short game. Every golfer gets an adrenaline rush from hitting a long, long, tee shot. But the real key to how to play better golf is to master the little clubs, the putter, sand wedge, and the clubs you choose to pitch and chip with.
  3. Get in better shape. You’ve heard the argument: Golfers aren’t real athletes. It’s true that most bad golfers aren’t. But the better players take time to exercise, improve muscle tone, improve flexibility, and to build leg strength. Better flexibility helps you develop a longer swing and hit the ball farther.
  4. Take lessons. You’re never too old to take a series of golf lessons from a PGA Professional. They have the training and keen eyes to spot flaws in your swing, and the ability to communicate advice to you in a way you can take right to the course. They know how to play better golf and can pass their wisdom on to you.
  5. Play more often. This may sound obvious, but if you only play once a month, it is extremely difficult to develop the muscle memory needed to have a reliable, consistent golf swing. On your path to learning how to play better golf, try to get out to the course at least once a week, even if you only practice or play nine holes.
