You do not have to play at a casino in the Caribbean to learn how to play Caribbean Stud Poker. The game originated in the Caribbean, but has spread to casinos throughout the world. When you learn how to play Caribbean Stud Poker, you will find that it is very similar to five card stud. The big differences are that you play against the casino instead of the other players, and a prorgressive side bet may be made.

  1. Place your original bet and receive your cards. When you learn how to play Caribbean Stud Poker, the first step is placing a bet known as the ante, it must be a minimum bet determined by the casino and listed at the table.  You may also place an additional bet to play the progressive jackpot. Five cards are dealt face down to you, and four cards are dealt face down to the dealer with one face up.
  2. Determine if you want to remain in the hand. One of the next steps when learning how to play Caribbean Stud Poker is to determine if you want to remain in the hand after receiving your five cards and seeing the dealer's face up card. If you do, you must make a bet that is twice the amount of your ante, known as the wager. If you wish to fold, you do not make an additional bet, but lose your ante bet to the casino.
  3. Reveal the cards and determine the winner. The player and the dealer both now reveal their five cards. One thing to keep in mind when you learn how to play Caribbean Stud Poker is that the dealer must have a hand that qualifies. For the dealer to qualify he must have at least and Ace and King in his hand or higher ranking hand such as pair, two pair, three of a kind, straight, flush, etc.  If the dealer does not qualify, you receive your ante back along with a payment equal to your ante, and you receive your wager back without being paid extra for it.  If the dealer qualifies, the hands are compared and the player with the higher hand wins.
  4. Determining the payout if the player wins. If the player wins the hand, you will find as you learn how to play Caribbean Stud Poker that the payout can vary. There is a chart listed at the table. The player receives his ante back along with an amount equal to his ante. He is then paid an amount for his wager bet according to the chart based on the type of hand he won with.  The progressive jackpot is paid out if the player has a flush or better, with the jackpot varying based on the type of winning hand. The casino lists the jackpot payout at the table as well.
