With the craze that has developed in fantasy sports, many people are wondering how to play fantasy baseball.  With baseball being such a popular sport in the United States, many people want to know how to play fantasy baseball.  When someone has a fantasy baseball team, it makes every game that one of the players on their fantasy baseball team is in much more exciting.  Let's talk about how to play fantasy baseball.

  1. First off a draft is held for all people that are going to have a team in the league.  Each person in the league gets a draft pick in each round.  In some leagues, the draft order reverses each round.  This is called a "snake draft."  Other leagues just keep the draft order the same for every round.  This is at the discretion of the people in the league or the league commissioner.  It is important to know the requirements for players at each position that must be used in the league, so each person can draft the right number of players at each position.
  2. Once the teams are done drafting, it is important to set up a lineup for the season.  According to the league rules, the teams need to have a starting lineup and choose which players are in it and which players are on the bench.  The starting players' stats count and the bench players' stats do not.
  3. It is important to be aware of the scoring strategy of the fantasy baseball league you are in.  When learning how to play fantasy baseball, this can be a difficult aspect, because leagues use many different scoring styles.  Being familiar with the scoring style used in the league gives the managers in the league the best opportunity to win.  One way of scoring is by rating each team in each statistical category.  If there are 10 teams in the league, the team that leads in a statistic gets 10 points, the team in second place gets 9, and so on.  This is called rotisserie scoring.  Something that can be added is additional points for home runs or wins for pitchers.  That is up to the discretion of the league commissioner.  Alternatively, scoring can be done head to head.  This means two teams are against each other and whichever team leads in more statistics gets a win for that time period.  Usually a head to head "game" between two teams lasts a week.  Another option is to just total the statistics for the entire year with all of the stats compared against each other.  There are no wins and losses in a league like this, while there is in a head to head league.
  4. Once the season begins, there are different ways to improve the team.  Teams can sign free agents or trade to improve the team.  Free agents are the players that were not drafted in the league and are available to be picked up by anyone after the draft.  There are different rules for each league as far as how to sign a free agent.  A trade is when one team gives one or more players to another team and gets one or more players in return.  A team with a wealth of pitching making a trade to a team with extra hitters is a good idea. This is a very fun aspect of playing fantasy baseball.

The best way to learn how to play fantasy baseball is by being in a league.  Usually the other people in the league are willing to help the other new general managers. The commissioner, or the person in charge of the league, is another person to run to when learning how to play fantasy baseball.  Remember, the number one goal of fantasy baseball is to have fun and that should be achieved by every general manager in the league.
