How To Play Poker: Rules

When you sit down to play poker, you need to know how to play poker by the rules. Poker is a game where bluffing and fooling an opponent is perfectly acceptable as long as you play by the rules and do not cheat. To avoid cheating, you need to understand the rules and table ethics that are practiced at casino poker tables. Even when playing at home, unless you are told differently, you should play poker by the rules of the casino to avoid accusations of cheating. Once you have learned how to play by the rules, you can work on advancing your strategy.

  1. Present your buy in to the dealer. If you are at a casino, you must purchase your chips from the poker check in desk before arriving at the table or purchase your chips from the dealer himself. When purchasing poker chips from the dealer, place your money directly on the table in front of you. Be sure to inquire about the minimum buy in amount before making your purchase. Do not hand this money to the dealer. He will retrieve it so the camera above the table can view the amount and he will count out your chips. Do not touch the chips until he has finished counting.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the rules of the game. To keep the poker game moving at a reasonable speed, play a game in which you know the rules. Asking the dealer or other players for help will slow the game down significantly. Arguing that you won a hand when it turns out you have lost and would have known you lost if you knew the rules can frustrate the dealer and other players.
  3. Know the betting sequence and be prepared to bet on your turn. To help keep the game moving, learn when you must place either a small blind or large blind bet before the hand. Find out the rules for the maximum number of raises in a round and your maximum wager per bet. This will avoid having the dealer declare your wager invalid and returning it to you.
  4. Do not string your bets at the table. Stringing a bet is when you place a few chips in the pot to call or raise and after watching the other players' reactions try to add an additional raise to the pot. Instead, if you are going to bet, announce your bet as a call, a raise or a re-raise before you touch your chips. This will make it clear to the dealer and other players what your wager is and avoid accusations of cheating by stringing your bet.
