Knowing how to prevent diabetes could make the difference between life and death. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Each year, more and more people are being diagnosed with diabetes.

  1. Exercise. One of the leading causes of diabetes is obesity. By getting off your butt and moving around, you can dramatically reduce your chances of having diabetes. Combined with other lifestyle changes, exercise is key to prevent diabetes.

  2. Watch what you eat. The number of people being diagnosed with diabetes is directly related to the growing waistlines of Americans. With high consumption of sweets and foods that are high in fat, your chances of being diabetic are greatly increased. In order to prevent diabetes, put the doughnut down and grab an apple. Eating healthy can be as simple as following the food pyramid set up by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

  3. If you are overweight, you have to lose weight. To prevent diabetes, there is one thing that has to happen if you are overweight. You have to lose weight. Not only is being obese a cause of diabetes, it can lead to heart disease as well. The last thing you want is to be an overweight diabetic with an erratic ticker. Losing weight is not easy, but it will seriously save your life.

Many people mistakenly believe that they could never be diabetic. If you are leading a sedentary lifestyle that includes cookie crumbs on your shirt, you are definitely at risk for diabetes. It is important to prevent diabetes because it is very difficult to reverse the effects of the disease once it has progressed.
