How to prevent water pollution is something everyone needs to consider. Water is one of the main necessities of people, plants, and animals to survive. Everyday, our water sources are being polluted by many different things being dumped into rivers, lakes, and streams. Water pollution can cause amebiasis, dysentery, hepatitis and typhoid fever. Everyone is responsible for keeping the water sources free from pollution. Doing your part to help will go a long way in making our waters pure and clean. Here are a few ways of how to prevent water pollution.

- If you are visiting a lake, river or stream and see trash laying on the ground, pick it up and dispose of it properly. This prevents it from ending up in the water.
- If you see someone illegally dumping items or trash near a water source, get a plate number. Call the local police department and turn them in. Give the plate number and information on what was being dumped as well as the location and time.
- Do not overuse pesticides or fertilizer close to water sources such as rivers, lakes and streams. Excessive use can cause runoff into nearby water sources.
- Dispose of paints, oils, cleaning products, antifreeze, etc. properly. This prevents it from accidently ending up in water sources.
- Gather friends or family members and pick a lake, river or stream to clean up.
- Pick up after your pets if they use the bathroom outside. Dispose of dog feces and cat litter properly.
