You've decided to move into the world of percussion and gotten a set of congas. Now you need to know how to properly support a set of conga drums.
- Stand versus Strap. You will need to find out what kind of support your conga drum needs. If it is a single conga drum with a metal loop at the top and one at the bottom, it is meant to be attached to a strap and supported with the body like a marching drum. If there is a bracket at the top or side, it is meant to be used with a stand.
- Setting up the stand. Unfold the three legs at the bottom as far as you can, and tighten the clamp. Make sure that there are two pointing outward at equal angles and one leg pointing straight toward you. This will keep the conga drums from being scratched on the metal legs. Set up the height of the stand so that you can play the congas with your arms straight out from the elbow, and comfortably. There are three pipes with two clamps in most stands. Use the thinnest, tallest pipe to set the height, and lower the second pipe so that the two clamps are together. Otherwise, as conga player Ryan Larson says, "It's not set up to sustain all that weight and will slowly slide down."
- Place the conga drum set on the stand. there should be bars or sometimes bolts sticking upward at the top of the conga stand, one on each side. If they are not aligned, loosen the topmost clamp and move the smallest pipe until the bolts or bars are even as you look at them, one on each side. Tighten the clamp. Place the larger, deeper-voiced conga drum on the right side and push down until firmly in place. Do the same on the left with the smaller, higher-voiced conga. If there are fasteners, attach them and tighten.
By now, your conga drum set should be properly supported and ready to play.
