Learning how to punch a punching bag is definitely worthwhile because it's such a great form of exercise. On the surface, it may seem like a pretty simple thing to do, but there are a few things you need to understand if you want to get the most out of your punching bag workout. Also, if you punch a punching bag wrong, you could potentially injure your hands, and that can be fairly unpleasant.

To punch a punching bag, you will need:

  • A pair of boxing gloves
  • Tape to wrap your hands, or glove wraps
  • A punching bag
  1. Wrap your hands with tape. Most boxers use gauze and cotton, but sometimes people prefer so-called “glove wraps” for training. These are kind of like pre-made wraps that you slip on, and they’re more convenient for training purposes.
  2. Put on your gloves. Most boxers use special heavy bag gloves, which are lighter weight and easier to put on. Make sure they’re not too light, especially if you’re a hard puncher.
  3. Go up to the punching bag and let loose with all the fury you can muster. Perform whatever drills or exercises you choose, working on your punching technique and your power. Throw everything with full strength, and make sure you put your body behind it. When you punch a punching bag, you should aim at a point beyond the target, to insure good follow through.

Remember, a punching bag is a workout tool that builds power and stamina, so push against the weight of the bag when you punch. To get the most out of the workout, you should continue until you build up a good heavy sweat. At the end of the process, you muscles should be fatigued, and your heart rate should be up. Don’t overdo it, because it is a pretty intense workout.
