Knowing how to purchase a domain name is essential for any business owner. A domain name provides you with your own virtual real estate. Domain names identify the location of a website on the Internet. Domain names have become significant identifiers for businesses. Some businesses are simply online-only establishments, which makes purchasing the correct domain name extremely important. Brainstorming a name, researching availability and registering the name are the steps required to own your piece of the Internet.

  1. Identify the name you would like to use. Make sure the name you choose reflects your personality or business. Decide if you would like a .com, .net or .biz domain. The most popular domain is .com.
  2. Research the availability of your desired domain name. If the domain is available for purchase, the next page will let you know. If not, this is a good method for finding out the expiration date of a domain. If the domain expires soon, and you really want it, you may be able to wait and purchase it soon.
  3. Locate a reputable domain registrar. Domain registrars handle the registration process. Locate a reputable domain registrar by visiting the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ICANN) website. Click on their list of ICANN accredited registrars.
  4. Register your domain. Once you have identified a registrar, complete the purchase process by following their purchasing guidelines. Consider parking your domain if you do not plan to install a website soon. If you do plan to install one, arrange for reasonable hosting for your domain.
