There are many benefits when you learn how to read a nutrition label. Before you eat that tasty treat from the grocery or rip open the package on that snack, try and learn how to read the nutrition label. Knowing what goes into your body is very important--so important that knowledge of the chemicals and vitamins that are  needed by your body is essential. What exactly is an nutrition label anyway?

A nutrition label is present on most any food product in packaging. It covers all the ingredients and nutritional values of the product. If you know how to read the nutrition label, you can control what you intake. Many people do not understand the different categories listed on the label but it only takes a moment to understand.
There are eight sections of the nutrition label. They are listed as follows:

  1. First you must determine your serving size. All the facts that follow this section are based on the amount listed under the serving size. If you consume over the amount of your suggested serving size; the following sections will have to be adjusted.
  2. You must know the amount of calories per serving. If you eat more you consume more calories. What are calories exactly? Calories are the measure of energy you get when you consume the serving size of whatever food you eat. This section can help you manage your weight.
  3. This section explains fats. This includes grams of saturated, trans fat and the total of all fats that will be consumed with the suggested serving. There are "good" fats and "bad" fats but suggestions are given for each one regardless.
  4. When learning how to read the nutrition label do not forget to check your cholesterol. This area of the label alerts the consumer to how much cholesterol is included in the serving.
  5. Sodium intake is monitored next. This is a very important aspect of health. Too little sodium as well as too much sodium can both be detrimental to health. Sodium should be limited to 2400 mg daily (about a teaspoon of table salt).
  6. The next section includes the fiber amount in each serving. If you are having digestive problems; you may be getting too little fiber in your diet. Fiber is essential in a healthy lifestyle because the body needs roughage to digest the other foods.
  7. Protein is essential for losing or gaining weight. In health and wellness, it is often stressed that protein is the source of strength and promotes the metabolism. Who knew protein could do so much.
  8. The final section of the nutrition label deals with vitamin percentage or the percent daily value.  These recommendations are made according to a 2,000 calorie diet. The percent daily value shows if a certain food is high or low in nutrients.

So, now do you feel as if you know how to read the nutrition label? It is never as complicated to understand as it may seem. Health and wellness is a lifestyle, not a diet. Learning how to read the nutrition label is a small task to accomplish and can help you obtain a healthy long life span.

So, before you munch away, read your labels. You may be surprised at what you find.
