How To Recognize Cardiac Problems

Sadly, many people do not realize they have something wrong with their heart until a stroke or heart attack strikes because the symptoms sometimes seem more like a simple part of aging and not cardiac problems. By understanding several different symptoms, you can realize when there may be a problem with your heart and a need to go to the doctor.

1. Angina. Angina is one of the most common symptoms of heart problems. Pain usually accompanies angina, but the feeling can also be described as a discomfort, pressure, aching, burning, heaviness, fullness, or squeezing. Although it is usually in the chest, sometimes this feeling can also be felt in the arms, neck, back, jaw, throat or shoulders. Angina is often misdiagnosed as indigestion.

2. Aging Symptoms. Some symptoms can seem like aging more than a signal for cardiac problems. Becoming short of breath while doing a routine activity such as climbing a set of stairs can be an early sign of problems with the heart. Sweating easily or while doing something that would normally not cause you to sweat is also an indicator. The feeling of weakness, often associated with aging, is often overlook and not usually thought of being a sign of cardiac problems. Nausea, dizziness, increasing heartbeats or pounding in the chest, and chest discomfort or pain are also symptoms that can mean problems with the heart.

3. Palpitations. Other symptoms of cardiac problems, like palpitations, are easier to notice but are more dangerous if overlooked. Palpitations can be described as skipped beats, an irregular heartbeat, or even a flip-flop like feeling in the chest.

The only way to know if you have cardiac problems, such as heart disease, is to see your physician. It is very important not to continue to put off going to see a doctor if a problem with the heart is suspected. Heart problems can be very aggressive, and will not simply disappear with time. Lifestyle changes, medication, and sometimes surgeries can be used to fight cardiac problems. The type of treatment depends on how soon the disease is caught. That is why it is important to know the symptoms and see your doctor for checkups annually.
