Data loss is a headache that all computer users will have to contend with at some point, which is why just about everyone will want to know how to recover hard drive data from the inevitable nasty computer crash. Even those who attempt to insure against such potentially catastrophic events with backups and careful maintenance could stand to lose a precious day's worth of work at the very least. Those of you that use computers to record your creativity in the form of writing or art can certainly relate to the frustration that this can cause. Knowing how to recover hard drive data can mitigate the stress that follows the sudden loss of your hard work.

You will need the following tools or services in order to recover hard drive data:

  • A hard drive data rescue program

  • A hard drive recovery service

  • A spare hard drive

  1. Download hard drive rescue software. The cheapest way to recover hard drive data is to find a recovery program that will scan the hard drive and potentially find lost files for you. If this solution works, immediately transfer the files over to a spare drive, preferably an external device with the same storage capacity as the drive where you lost your data.

  2. Use a hard drive recovery service. In the event that your data is scrambled or the hard drive is not detected by your operating system, you may have a device that is no longer functioning. In this case you cannot start up the hard drive to access the data. This is where a hard drive recovery service is needed. They will repair the drive to operational status and transfer the data to a new drive for you.

Warnings:

  • When using the software-based recovery option, be sure not to write anything to the stricken hard drive, even if you can do so. Sensitive files may be over-written as a result, or the entire hard drive's data could be scrambled beyond recovery.

  • Hard drive recovery services are highly expensive, due to the sterile (clean room) conditions they must employ when opening and servicing the device.

  • Be sure to choose a reputable hard drive recovery service if you decide to go this route. If you may have personal information, trade secrets, client information or other embarrassing or sensitive data, you want to make sure they will not do anything whatsoever with this information beyond recovering it for you.
