How To Recycle Old Televisions

Need to know how to recycle old televisions? As the United States moves to digital televisions, many people are looking for ways to recycle their old television sets. Many landfills will no longer accept any type of electronic equipment because these pieces are filled with lead. Recycling programs are popping up across the country, and you can take advantage of one of these programs to do your part in saving our environment by recycling your old television.

  1. Check out Earth 911 online. The Earth 911 website provides a database that is easy to search by using your local zip code. This website is recommended by the EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency, as a resource for finding a drop off site near your location to recycle your old televisions.
  2. Call your local television retailers. Some large retail stores sponsor old television and computer recycling events. A simple phone call will let you know if they are a sponsor of a recycling program in your area and if they accept old televisions year round or only during specific dates.
  3. Contact a recycling center. You may find a list of recycling centers in your local phone book or you can contact the local landfill to find a recycling program. Recycling centers are available in every state, and many municipalities are adding recycling programs to keep old televisions and computers out of their landfills.
  4. Use the Waste Management Recycle America program. If you have service from the Waste Management company, you may be able to join them in their recycling efforts by giving them your old televisions. They team up with LG and Sony electronics every year to provide the public with free recycling services.
