How To Relieve Chest Pain
Knowing how to relieve chest pain caused by minor ailments and digestive disorders can make a significant improvement in how you feel. There are many things that can be done at home to help alleviate this type of pain. However, these particular methods are not intended for those who may be having a heart attack or another serious condition.
- Activity. Decreasing activity can help relieve chest pain. This may be especially so if the pain is caused by strenuous activity, pulled muscles and/or other types of injuries. Immediately stopping the activity that led to the initial pain is also crucial to avoid further strain and/or injury.
- Applying compresses. Cool compresses can reduce any swelling. The key is to make sure that the compresses are not too hot nor too cold. These can typically be applied as needed throughout the day.
- Positioning. When pain is caused by digestive problems or an injury, changing positions can relieve chest pain by redistributing the pressure. Lying on the side or propping one's self up may be beneficial.
- Medications. Over the counter pain relievers can assist in pain relief and reduce inflammation. In addition, topical ointments containing menthol may also be used to provide almost immediate relief. Pain medications and topical creams to relieve chest pain can be purchased at most pharmacies or drug stores.
- Treatment. When efforts to relieve chest pain fail, it may be time to see your physician. Pain that does not go away, is accompanied by other symptoms, and/or becomes worse may be indicative of a serious health condition.
