Knowing how to remove antivirus on XP may not be something you'd consider useful under normal circumstances. However, if your antivirus program is interfering with the installation of games, drivers or other programs you need, or if you simply want to install another type of antivirus program, you may have no other choice. In any case, knowing how to remove antivirus programs on Windows XP may actually be to your benefit.

  1. Use the antivirus program's uninstall option. The primary way to remove antivirus programs on XP is to let the program itself do this task for you. Most legitimate programs place their own uninstall function in the Windows program menu for easy and obvious access. Try clicking on the "Start Menu," then select the "All Programs" menu. From there you should be able to locate the antivirus program's menu entry. Click on that and look for the "Uninstall" shortcut. Once the uninstall window opens, follow the instructions to finish the process.

  2. Use the Windows uninstall feature. While it is unlikely that a legitimate computer security program would require you to do this, Windows has its own program management feature that will help you remove programs, including antivirus software. To make use of this, click on the "Start Menu," select the "Control Panel," and then choose the "Add or Remove Programs" menu option. Once the list of programs comes up, locate the program you want to remove, and click the "Remove" button. Follow the instructions to remove the antivirus program automatically.

Remember, when you remove antivirus software on XP, be sure to install a replacement version quickly. Every moment without an antivirus program running on your system puts you at higher risk of infection.
