Knowing how to remove cat urine smell can be an important part of cleaning up after your pet. This is not only to keep your home clean, but also because cats are creatures of habit. Until the smell is eliminated, there's a good chance that your cat may continue to urinate in the same location. The following will help to eliminate cat urine smell when your cat has an accident outside of the litter box.

  1. Blot the area thoroughly. Using a clean rag or paper towels, first try to clean up as much of the cat urine as you can from the surface. It is always best to try to detect the cat urine soon after the incident has occurred. This will prevent the urine from seeping into carpet or wood floors. If you smell cat urine but have trouble locating it in your home, try using a black light to find the source.
  2. Mix a vinegar cleaning solution. This natural cleaning agent will help remove the smell of cat urine from most surfaces. Combine one part white vinegar with two parts water and add a little dish soap. Apply to the surface until it is thoroughly soaked. Use a fresh rag to soak up all of this solution. Rinse with clean water and dry with another rag or paper towels.
  3. Cover with baking soda. After washing with vinegar water, sprinkle the area with baking soda. Leave the baking soda on the cat urine stain for 24 hours if possible and then vacuum the area. Baking soda is a good natural way to remove the cat urine smell from your home.
  4. Try a pet stain remover. Most pet stores sell cleaning products that are specially designed to remove pet stains like cat urine from your home. Most of these products contain enzymes to help break down the odor caused by urine. This can be particularly helpful in keeping your cat from returning to the same area to urinate in the future.
