Owners of the Volkswagen Jetta often wonder how to remove the fuel filter in a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. The fuel filter in a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta is positioned in an unusual area, outside of the engine compartment. The unique design of the latching system that attaches the fuel lines to the fuel filter in the 2001 Jetta makes it particularly challenging to remove. The entire process does not require many special tools and can be done with some patience.
To remove the fuel filter in a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, you will need:
- A flathead screwdriver
- Protective eye glasses
- Locate the fuel filter. Look under your 2001 Volkswagen Jetta on the passenger's side. Towards the rear door along the undercarriage you will notice the fuel filter. The fuel filter on your Jetta should resemble a tin can, with one line coming in and one line going out.
- Remove the first line. Before removing the line be sure to wear protective eye gear; some gasoline may spray from the hose when it is released. Push the fitting piece inwards towards the fuel filter. Using the flathead screwdriver, push the clip down and yank outwards on the fuel hose. It should come loose; if it does not you may need to apply more pressure to the clip.
- Remove the second line. Remove the fuel line from the backside of the fuel filter. Repeat the same process as in step two, except this time push the clip up rather than down and yank outwards.
- Remove the fuel filter. The fuel filter will now fall out of place; simply remove it with your hand and dispose of it properly. The new filter for the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta simply clips into place.
Be careful not to break the clips on the fuel line for the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. The entire fuel line has to be replaced. You do not need any special tools to remove the fuel filter from the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, contrary to what the dealership may tell you.
