Want to learn how to remove oil stains from leather? Leather is a very versatile material. It is comfortable and offers different varieties and textures and colors. There are different kinds of leather and it depends on the kind of leather, if the stain has penetrated the leather or if it is sitting on the surface.
- First you need to determine the type of leather. There are two types of leather, pure and semi aniline. Pure aniline leather is hard to clean because it penetrates the surface. This leather is used mainly in work gloves or boots. Semi aniline leather has a protective coating that protects it from stains. This leather is used to make coats, belts, bags, etc. We will assume you have semi aniline leather for this article, as this is the most widely used leather.
- Blot. When leather is stained with oil you need to remove the stain as quickly as you can. Get a clean cloth and blot the area of the stain. Be sure to blot very gently. The cloth will absorb the oil and start to remove the oil stain. This will “lift” the stain away from the leather. Never, ever, wipe the stain off of leather to remove it. This will only make the stain spread, become larger and harder to remove.
- Powder. After removing the oil stain with the cloth, apply some talcum powder. You can apply a generous amount on the whole stain, and be sure to cover the entire area of the stain. The powder will absorb the grease left on the leather. You will need to leave the powder on the stain for about 4 to 5 hours.
- Condition. After the oil stain is removed, you will want to protect the leather. This will keep other stains away and make it look like new again. For the semi aniline leather, apply a conditioner specifically made for leather.
