It's hard to imagine life these days without a computer, but that's exactly what you may be facing unless you know how to remove a virus from a computer. Viruses can be nasty and annoying but they can usually be effectively dealt with even if you don't have an advanced degree in computer science.

  1. Diagnose the problem. The first step in how to remove a virus from a computer is to identify what virus you have. Most viruses won't completely disable your system so you can typically still open a Web browser and do a search in your search engine of choice. You can usually quickly isolate what computer virus you may have by doing searches on the symptoms such as "computer virus that launches porn site" or "computer virus that disables printing."
  2. Removing the virus. If you can find a description of your virus from the above searches, multiple resources on the Web also have removal instructions, as far as the files you'll need to delete on your computer where the virus resides. Some viruses can be effectively dealt with this way and won't ever cause you problems again.
  3. Bring in the big guns. If you can't find out how to remove a virus from your computer or isolate the virus you're suffering from, it's time to bring in some help. Most anti-virus software providers such as Norton and McAfee provide anti-virus software that can deal with virtually any virus you face, and both companies offer downloadable anti-virus software with free trials.  Download and install the software and run a scan, which should find and destroy any viruses you have on your computer.
  4. The best offense is a good defense. The simplest way of how to remove a virus from a computer is to never get a virus in the first place. Don't open attachments sent to you by e-mail, don't visit suspicious Web sites or sites that offer pirated content, and don't download and install any .exe file unless it comes from a trusted, reputable source. Install any available security updates, invest in a good anti-virus software program and keep it updated.
