How To Report Email Fraud

Email spam is not just annoying, it can be an attempt to commit fraud, so here's how to report email fraud. These types of messages are often an attempt to steal your identity and personal information, or to collect money for goods or services that do not exist. If you receive an email that you believe is an attempt at fraud, you should report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center. Follow these steps to report potential email fraud.

1. If you receive an email that seems to be an attempt at fraud, visit the Internet Crime Complaint Center online at www.ic3.gov. Common types of email fraud include get-rich-quick schemes, work at home offers, "guaranteed" loans or easy money, and bogus investment opportunities. Keep an eye out for email that seem to come from a known institution, such as a bank, but are actually an attempt to collect your personal information.
2. Click on the red text at the bottom of the screen that reads "File a Complaint."
3. Read the information and disclaimers on the following page and, if you agree, click "I Accept."
4. You will be led through a series of questions that help you report your claim. You will be asked to describe the email in question, as well as any monetary or other loss that you suffered as a result of the email.
5. Complaints received by the Internet Crime Complaint Center may be referred to federal, state, local or international law enforcement or regulatory agencies for investigation. It is important to include accurate contact information in case you need to be contacted to provide additional information.
