How To Run In The Rain

Knowing how to run in the rain diminishes runners from the threat of an accident or experiencing medical issues later. Most tenured runners enjoy and indulge in the activity of running regardless of weather conditions.  When rain is threatening or occurring, there is no reason to delay or cancel your run.  Instead of canceling the activity, take a few additional precautions.  Working with the following tips will help provide you with the know how to run in the rain while staying safe, healthy and continuing the fun of running.

  1. Consider the Temperature.  When the weather is cold outside and raining, make sure you dress appropriately.  Layer your running attire to guarantee you stay warm.  When the temperature rises during your run, remove a layer to accommodate the warmth.  If you are an avid runner, you might want to visit the sportswear section of your local department store or a sportswear store.  Running attire has been designed specific to runner needs with weather conditions in mind.
  2. Wear Reflective Attire.  Drivers are required to keep their lights on when it is raining.  This is a requirement because skies become dark and clear viewing is decreased when it rains.  When running in the rain, remember to wear clothing that will make you visible.  Wear light colored running attire or running attire that has been enhanced with reflective designs or material.
  3. Wear a Garbage Bag.  That's right, instead of wearing a raincoat, which is much too heavy and impractical, take a large (30 gallon) garbage bag and cut holes to accommodate your head and arms and wear it while running.  A garbage bag is light and will keep the rain off.  To make sure you are highly visible, make sure the bag is one of the white or gray ones and not black.
  4. Add a Hat.  Add a vinyl or rain resistant hat while running in the rain.  The one thing you don't want to do is get your head soaked while running.  This could result in a major head cold or even pneumonia.
