How Safe Is Cancun, Mexico?

 For many travelers visiting the Mexican Riviera main question asked is: how safe is Cancun?  Many travelers have concerns about violence associated with narcotics trafficking.  Others have concerns about petty crime and violence that may be targeted at tourists visiting the area.  In addition, there are often concerns about tropical storms and hurricanes that occasionally do damage to the region.

According to the US State Department the majority of serious violent crime in Mexico occurs in the larger cities that boarder the United States.  In recent years there has been an increased presence of Mexican Federal Police, Tourist Police, and Marines in the coastal areas between Cancun and the Belize boarder.  There is heaving policing activity in the primary tourist areas of Cancun, and while petty crime such a robbery can occur, the incidence of violence in tourist areas is quiet low.  Large hotels and resorts are often staffed with extra security, making crime in those locations even lower.

Safety issues created by tropical storms and hurricanes only occur seasonally, with the peak period occurring between July and November.  With the advancement of forecasting systems, people are able to receive advanced warning regarding large storms, which aids in evacuation and prevention of injuries or loss of life.  Basic safety precautions while swimming or participating is water sports is also highly recommended.

Tourists can increase their safety by taking basic precautions with belongings and money.  Remaining in highly-trafficked well lit areas is also helpful.  Scheduling visits outside the the peak storm season, and consultation of weather forecasts is also recommended.
