Need to know how to safely eat Thailand street food? Cuisine in Thailand is ranked among the world’s best! Eating street food when traveling can be fun and affordable, and will allow you to learn more about the local culture. Even though there are huge cultural differences from what you may be used to, street food in Thailand can be an adventurous way to enjoy your experience. With a little knowledge of what to watch out for, you can pick up many edible delights in Thailand. Consider the following before trying out one of the numerous street food dishes available in Thailand.

  1. Try out your taste buds at home before your trip. Make a list of the dishes you enjoy and remember what they look like. That way, you will be able to spot them among the many street food options you will encounter. Pad Thai is a favorite noodle dish in the U.S. and in Thailand, and you can’t go wrong with fresh fruit like mango or pineapple. Other popular dishes are prepared with curry, a favorite spice in Thailand, though perhaps you should ease into curry dishes if you aren’t familiar with the spices.
  2. Being busy is a good sign when it comes to street vendors. If there is a line and the vendor seems popular, chances are good the food is fresh to meet the demand. Choose street food vendors that prepare food on the spot, and make sure your meal is heated well.
  3. Have a basic understanding of the language. If you know you won’t be interested in exotic choices, make sure you can say the names of the dishes or ingredients you do like. Don’t count on the locals knowing English, even though many street vendors in Thailand are familiar with it and can direct you to dishes you may enjoy.
