Knowing how to score boxing matches is rather useful. Of course, if you want to become a judge you need to know the basics.  It can also help you if you like to follow boxing or if you want to train yourself or someone else. Take the following points into consideration to begin learning how to score matches.

  1. Know the boxing association's rules. For particular amateur and professional boxing organizations and associations, there are rules and regulations that need to be abided by. For obvious reasons, these are important to know in order to score matches.
  2. Learn automatic score situations. You need to be aware of instances in which there are automatic consequences on the score.  For instance, a referee may take away a point for conduct, or it is an automatic "10-8" round for those with a knockdown. Be aware of these situations.
  3. Punches landed is a huge indicator. One of the simplest indicators is punches landed. In most cases, the boxer with the most punches landed will win the round. This is a strong factor in the scoring of boxing matches.
  4. Ring presence and control is also crucial. Punches landed and ring presence make up the criteria for rounds that need to be judged; i.e. when it is not obvious in terms of knockdowns or points taken away. The fighter who has control, who is able to counter punch, and who is basically able to control the round will normally win, in conjunction with punches landed and power punches.
