No matter if you are hunting whitetail for sport or simply to help reduce the population in your area, it is important to follow some simple steps. Be aware that while whitetail deer are wile creatures, they can still be very aware of their surroundings, and therefore it is important not only to keep yourself well hidden in your surroundings, but also to use realistic calls in order to lure the animals to your location.

1. Purchase a deer hunting license. This is the most important thing you can do before shooting a whitetail deer. If you are not properly registered to kill the deer, you will not only be subject to a hefty fine, but may also have to serve some jail time.
2. Find a great location. Typically, whitetail deer are located in woody areas with a nearby water source. Make sure to find a spot that you can place your hunting blind that has access to both of these areas.
3. Find the right clothing for deer hunting. Be aware that this may vary depending on your location and on the time of year–for example, when deer hunting in Wisconsin in November, you will need heavy duty coveralls, and warm hats and gloves, though while hunting in Texas in the spring, you may only need some basic camouflage shirts and orange gear in order for you to stand out to your fellow hunters.
4. Purchase the right equipment. This means not only finding the right kind of gun and ammunition, but also finding a hunting call or scent that can lure whitetail deer to your location.
5. Find a good hunting spot. This is probably the most sure-fire way to score a whitetail deer. Talk with local hunters or outfitting companies. Tell them you are interested in hunting whitetail, and are looking for a great hunting spot. They may be able to refer you to a prime location. Be aware that some places are now charging fees for hunting services.
