How To Serve Underhanded In Tennis

By keeping some basic guidelines in mind, you can learn how to serve underhanded in tennis. This type of serve is especially effective for individuals who are just learning the sport, or who are having difficulty mastering the overhand serve in tennis. Remember to practice the serve several times until it has been perfected-then you can unleash it on your tennis opponents!

  1. Stand with feet together and tennis racquet in right hand. Hold ball loosely in left hand. Stand tall, with eyes focused approximately ten feet in front of your body.
  2. Extend your left arm out in front of your body, with your palm facing up. Keep arm straight, but without locked elbow.
  3. Use the left hand to toss the tennis ball slightly into the air. At the same time, step forward slightly with the left leg, until the left foot is approximately below the extended left elbow.
  4. Quickly bring the right hand (which is holding the tennis racquet) forward and under the ball. Extend the right arm straight out in front of you, keeping in mind where your target is located. Bring the arm to around a 45 degree angle from the body-if the arm comes too high, the ball will shoot straight into the air. Practice this technique several times before using it on an opponent. While this type of tennis serve may seem awkward at first, when done correctly it is extremely effective.
  5. If you are left handed, reverse all of the above directions. These are intended for a right-handed tennis player.
