How To Set Personal Goals

Learning how to set personal goals is a life skill that will benefit you many times over. It is important to set a clear standard,  work hard at it, and finally reach achievement. Personal goals can provide a vision for you about what you want to improve upon and give you a sense of accomplishment when reached.

  1. Think about what you want to change or improve on. Write all of your ideas down and don't rule anything out. It doesn't matter if you want to walk on the moon, write it down. This is the brainstorming portion of goal setting and you don't want to limit yourself. You could miss out on something really amazing.
  2. Decide which goals are important to you. It may be great to walk on the moon, but a pay raise is more beneficial and practical for where you are in life. Decide which changes are important for you to make. Personal goals can involve health and fitness, finances and career, or home and family. You can choose one goal to work on or choose multiple things to work on.
  3. Start small and work you way up. If you want something big to change in your life, figure out what steps it will take to get there. Each step is a personal goal that you can work on. When you reach that goal, move forward onto the next step. For example, if you want to change jobs, your overall personal goal is to change jobs, but there are several steps or goals along the way. You need to refresh your resume. You need to fill out applications. You need to do a job search. As you complete each goal, you are getting closer to the ultimate goal; a new job.
  4. Reward yourself when you reach a personal goal.  Many times, the result of reaching your goal is a reward in and of itself. If your goal revolves around working out more and eating better, you will notice that you have more energy and may have lost weight. While this is a reward, think about another way to treat yourself to something special. As you set personal goals, you will find yourself working hard to improving many different areas of your life.
