Need to know how to set up surround sound speakers? This is a project that can be a great feature in your home theater or entertainment area. There are some considerations to take into account in order to have the best listening experience. One of the most common surround sound system types is 5.1 surround sound. In this setup, there is one subwoofer, a center speaker, two front, and two rear speakers. There are also configurations with added speakers, such as 7.1 and even 9.1, with the first number being the number of speakers. Follow these steps to learn about how to set up surround sound speakers.
To set up surround sound speakers, you will need:
- Tape measure
- Speaker mounts
- Speaker stands
- Speaker wire
- Wire cutter/stripper
- Wall anchors
- Determine the locations for each speaker. For a professional look, use speaker stands or wall mounts. For a 5.1 surround system, a satellite speaker can be placed near the four corners of the room, and one in the center. This can cause a problem if you have a room that is not a square though, so this is where speaker stands can come in handy. If you have a setup with more than five surround speakers, more can be placed on the sides of the audience or behind them.
- If you are using speaker mounts, mark the area on the wall that the speaker will be attached. Install the speaker mounts using wall anchors to keep them secured to the wall.
- Run speaker wire from the location of each speaker in the room, to the audio source. Attach the wire to the source device and each speaker. Make sure to use the right outputs on the audio source, depending on which speaker is being attached.
