Need to know how to sharpen your skis? Learning how to sharpen your skis in your own home will save you time and money. Don't waste time taking them in and waiting around for the ski shop to do something you can easily learn to do yourself. And don't waste money on having someone else sharpen your skis. Save that money for drinks at the ski lodge after a long day of chasing ski bunnies.

What you will need to sharpen skis:

  • Skis
  • File
  • Towel

Tip: Be sure to sharpen the outer and inner edges of your skis, only. You should detune the heel and toe and not sharpen them.

  1. Place the ski on a flat surface. The base should be placed down on the flat surface. Take the file and begin to sharpen the edges. Use one hand to hold the ski down and the other to file. Do this with long and even downward strokes.
  2. Strokes need to be even and long but light against the metal edges of the ski. Do this down the inner and outer edges of the ski. You will not need to sharpen the heel or nose of the ski.
  3. Complete the process on both skis. The finished product will show sharpened edges on the skis. This will assist in the hold the ski has on the snow. Use the towel to wipe down the skis and remove and metal dust or residue.
