How To Shave With Straight Razor
Learning how to shave with a straight razor requires time, patience and most importantly, practice. Expect to cut yourself at least once while learning to use a straight razor, but remember it's all part of the learning process. As you become more skilled at using a straight razor you will be able to give yourself a smooth, even shave that can't be replicated with safety razors. This article will guide you step by step on how to successfully master using the straight razor.
To shave with a straight razor, you will need:
- A sharp razor
- shaving cream
- hot towel
- water
- shaving brush and bowl (optional)
- Prep the area. Before you can begin shaving with a straight razor you will need to prep your skin first. Apply a hot towel to the area that is to be shaved. Keep the towel on the area until it is cool to the touch. Repeat this step.
- Apply shaving cream. Use your hand to evenly apply a thick layer of shaving cream to the area. If using a shaving brush, place the shaving cream in a bowl and use the brush to paint the shaving cream onto your skin.
- Make the first shave. Pull your skin tight to one side to make shaving with a straight razor glide smoother. Hold the blade at a 20 degree angle and make a short, light stroke of the razor. Take your time and be gentle. Imagine the your skin is a balloon and you want to avoid popping it. Your goal is to cut the hair as close to the skin as possible. Use short strokes and finish with a long stroke. Make three passes to ensure an ultra smooth finish.
- Keep lathering. Be sure to keep your skin well-lathered after each pass.
- Shave in the right direction. Start by shaving with the grain (the direction that the hair grows). Next shave sideways to the grain and finish by shaving against the grain. Be extra careful when shaving against the grain as this is where many people cut themselves.
- Rinse. When you are done shaving with a straight razor, rinse with cold water to close the pores.
- Dry the razor. Always be sure to wash and thoroughly dry the razor after each use to prevent it from rusting.
