Learning how to shoot a basketball correctly is a trial and error process. Normally, it takes many attempts and adjustments to perfect your shot. The practice is well worth the time though. In order to shoot a basketball correctly, follow these simple tips.

  1. Learn shot mechanics. All power for your shot should come from your legs. It’s important to bend your knees slightly before taking a shot. As you are ready to shoot, extend your legs and allow the energy from your legs to propel your shot.
  2. Proper placement of the ball. The proper placement ensures better control and technique when taking the shot. It’s important to have the shooting hand in, the forearm should run parallel to your torso, with your fingertips touching the ball. Your other hand should hold the side of the ball. The form is correct when it forms a ninety degree angle between your armpits, elbow and wrist.
  3. As you release the ball, your shooting forearm extends. From there you want to snap your wrist. This allows the ball to come off your fingertips in the direction of your shot. As the ball leaves your hand, allow your wrist to follow through. Once the shot is off your fingers, you should droop with your forearm still extended.
  4. After learning mechanics and technique, practice as often as you can. Practicing allows you to analyze your shot to see if you are using the correct technique. If you notice your shot is falling short, you’re not using your knees enough. If you notice your shots are going off to the side, your forearm is not straight. The more you are able to practice, the better your technique will become.
