Learning how to shoot a basketball properly is not something you can do overnight. Even professional basketball players are still working on their shots, trying to make them better, so it is safe to say that shooting is not something you can learn how to do, but rather something you can learn how to do better. The following is some advice on how to shoot a basketball properly.

  1. Get a basketball and go to any court or hoop. The proper way to shoot for anyone is what comes naturally to you, and what works best, but it generally involves using a certain form as a starting point.
  2. Hold the basketball with both hands down in front of your stomach. Your knees should be bent at this point, and you should be facing the hoop and within shooting range.
  3. Unbend your knees as you raise the ball so that it is in front of your head, with your elbows bent. Then, with each hand behind the ball, between it and your head, push forward so that your hands go toward and up from the rim, from your point of view. When your arms are extended to the point that your elbows are almost unbent, leave your non-dominant hand where it is, and push forward a few more inches with your dominant hand's fingertips, releasing the basketball. This last part will demonstrate your aim.
  4. Practice doing this in one fast motion. With knees bent, and the ball low, raise up with your body and the basketball, extend your arms up and forward and push the ball off of your dominant hand's fingertips. This is the way to properly shoot a basketball, but it will take a lot of time and practice for you to get it down well.

Learning how to shoot a basketball properly is an important part of understanding the game. Keep practicing, and shoot from different areas and positions to get it down better.
