Do you want to know how to shop at local farmers markets? Local farmers markets are great places to find fresh produce. Many farmers markets will also feature local baked goods, cheeses, fresh herbs, and other products.  Shopping at farmers markets is a great way to support the farmers in your community while adding delicious variety to your diet.

  1. Locate a local farmers market. They can be found everywhere from downtown sidewalks to the most rural small towns. You can search online, check local advertisements, or ask around to locate one close to home. Most farmers' markets run from late spring through the fall and will feature different produce as it comes into season. Most are open one day each week, so be sure to check days and hours.
  2. Stop by the ATM. Many farmers' markets do not accept credit cards, so picking up some cash is a good idea.  Having some smaller bills will also make it easier for the people staffing the market, often the farmers themselves.
  3. Browse first. Most farmers' markets are made up of many small booths, each representing a different farm or company. The best strategy is often to walk the entire place first. This will help you get an idea of what's in season and what looks best at each booth. You can also compare prices and figure out your shopping plan.
  4. Pick out your produce. Now it's time to select what you want to buy. Take a good look at the fruits and vegetables, smell the herbs, and feel free to ask questions if you aren't sure how to pick out the best cucumbers or what to do with rutabagas. The people at the farmers market are usually very knowledgeable about their inventory and happy to offer suggestions. Remember your favorite booths at the farmers' market for the next time you shop and become a regular.
  5. Enjoy your farmers' market bounty. You'll typically want to use your fresh produce within a few days while it's at its best. You'll be amazed at how different some fruits and vegetables taste when they are fresh, blueberries, strawberries, and tomatoes are particularly good to try eating local.
