If your jeans or other denim clothing are too big, learn how to shrink denim. Changing the fit of your denim will give it an entirely new look. When your denim fits you properly, it makes your clothing look much better and makes you look better. If you have lost weight or your jeans have stretched out, learn how to shrink your denim so it fits your body better.

In order to learn about how to shrink denim, you will need the following:
  • Washing machine
  • Dryer
  • Laundry detergent
  1. Set your washing machine to hot. By using the hottest heat setting on your washing machine, you will achieve the most shrinkage for your denim. When hot water saturates denim, the fibers in the denim contract and become tighter--this is what causes denim to shrink. If your washing machine only has a warm option, select the warm option. Complete the washing cycle as you normally would with whatever laundry detergent you normally use. Make sure to wash your denim alone for best results.
  2. Dry your denim on high. After you remove your denim from the washing machine, place it in the dryer on the highest setting. Drying your denim further tightens the denim's fibers. Make sure you dry your denim completely for best results. If necessary, repeat the drying cycle until your denim is completely dry. Do not air dry your denim.
  3. Repeat. Repeat step one and two as needed. Some denim can be worn multiple times before it stretches out. Other denim requires "re-shrinking" each time you wear it.
