How To Shrink Polyester Coats

By keeping some basic guidelines in mind, you can learn how to shrink polyester coats. For best results, when shrinking the polyester coat, be sure to check the size between each cycle in order to prevent over shrinkage of the coat.

Supplies:

  • Washing machine
  • Dryer

  1. First, remove any important documents from the pockets of the polyester coat. In addition, be sure to take out chapstick, hand lotion or other products that could possibly break and stain the polyester coat.
  2. Place the coat in the washing machine. Wash the coat in water that is as hot as you can get it. Make sure that the settings of the washer have been adjusted to their highest settings in order to achieve optimal results.
  3. Remove the coat from the washing machine, and place in the dryer. Along with the coat, place a few damp bath towels into the dryer. As with the washing machine, increase the temperature on the dryer to the highest settings possible. Allow the coat to run through the entire cycle of the dyer.
  4. Remove the coat from the dryer, and test for size. If the coat has been shrunken to the appropriate size, you can stop at this point. If the coat is still too large, start the process over from step two. As stated above, remember to check the coat for size at the end of each cycle in order to prevent shrinking the coat too much. While you can always get a polyester coat smaller, it is very difficult to make it much larger.
